6.30 -- Haircuts and Sleeping Superman

We had the busiest day ever and this was Lucas post-swimming, mid-snack on our way to Gramma and Grampa's house, proving that even Superman needs a nap sometimes.

Lucas, post haircut with his sucker. It was a bit bright outside. She gave him a faux-hawk and he thought he was pretty badass. Silly boy.

6.29 -- Help!

Lucas was putting on his pajamas tonight (his newest thing is that he needs to change into his pajamas in the family room), and his head got stuck in the shirt. It is a shirt that is kind of big on him that my parents bought in Mexico, but it has a ridiculously small neck hole (as do all of the shirts they buy in Mexico... what is the deal with that?). Anyway, Lucas could not get his shirt off and I heard, "HELP! My head is too big for my body!" I am pretty sure that was the highlight of my day. What a silly little man.

I had some other cute pictures to post today, but this definitely won. Lucas and I went to the gym this morning and then played at the "fireman park" (the big red one behind the Marshall Center). He had a blast climbing this crazy tree there. I spent the better part of my afternoon cleaning and purging my closet of clothes that are too big (yay!) and trying on my "ultimate goal" pants...which fit...just not quite how I want them too. I think they will by fall. I am glad to be feeling so much better in my skin.

Summer break is off to a phenomenal start. We leave for the beach on Thursday or Friday...so there will be a bunch of blogs posted on Tuesday when we return. I know I will take more than enough pictures!

6.28 -- Lazy mornings

Lucas has always been an early riser, and he consistently wakes up between 6:30 and 7:00...every morning. It really doesn't matter if it is a weekday or the weekend, a holiday, summer vacation, fall, winter...seriously, it doesn't matter. This kid has an internal alarm clock that never seems to fail. Even if he goes to bed late, he wakes up early. When I woke up this morning and looked at the clock expecting to see something that began with a 5 or 6 since the house was still silent, I was surprised to see it was already 8:30. As I lay there taking in the silence, I realized I could hear a few sounds...like the obnoxious birds outside enjoying the sunshine and Lucas's quiet little snores...yup, he was still out like a light. I went in to check on him and he was completely out (hence the picture above). Watching him sleep cracks me up. He oscillates between sleeping like me (curled up in a ball with at least one foot kicked out from the covers) or on his back with his leg crossed at the knee and his hands above his head. He's pretty sweet to watch sleep. Anyway, he didn't wake up until 9:45. I think that was definitely a record for him.

He spent the weekend at his dad's, which usually wears him out. They keep a different schedule, there are more kids there, and he never naps...so it usually takes some time to recover. He also woke up with a super stuffy nose and a bad cough. He seems to have caught a bug over there...not the same bug I had last week, unfortunately. I only say unfortunately because that one only lasted about 24 hours of a super stuffed up head and lots of sneezing. Hopefully he is over this quickly, as we are off to the coast on Thursday or Friday until about Tuesday. I am ready to get out of town and to enjoy some time at the ocean!

For now, we are snuggled on the couch getting ready to watch a movie. I sense some snuggles, lunch and a nap in his future and hopefully tomorrow he will be ready to get out of here and have some fun!

6.27 -- Fun in the sun!

Today was a perfect summer day, although it began hours before I would have liked and I got bit by more mosquitoes than I can count! I was up and ready to go at 5:40 this morning to walk 11, hilly, beautiful miles :). It was a great walk, despite my poor blistered heels. I need to go back to the shoe store and see why my shoes continue to give me blisters, because they are no fun at all! I had a delicious breakfast, followed by a lovely nap and read another quarter of my book. I think I could get used to this summer vacation idea!

I picked Lucas up from Jeff's and was surprised by a call from Cami. I miss her far too much, but I love that no matter how much time passes, everything goes back to how it's always been. It is one of the most comforting feelings in the world. Lucas and I then went to a BBQ at Matt and Heather's...which also plays into the category of no matter how much time passes, everything feels comfortable. They had just gotten back from fishing in Alaska and we had the MOST amazing dinner. Matt was a grill master and prepared salmon three ways and Heather made some delicious halibut. It was a definite feast. I think the highlights of my evening were watching Greg and Nick attempt to teach Lucas how to throw a football and to hike or watching Greg and Lucas chase each other and roll around on the floor playing Spiderman (I am still not sure who had more fun). If it had not been for those damn blood-sucking mosquitoes, it would have been the perfect evening outside. I am so excited for Tai's wedding and the pig roast to spend more time with my lovely friends!

6.26 -- To love or to hate the yard?

When we started looking for a house last summer, one of my top wants was a large yard. In retrospect, I probably should have thought about what a pain in the ass it was going to be to mow a fifth of an acre of grass every weekend. However, I really enjoy having the space for Lucas to play; trees, plants and flowers to grow; and hopefully we will actually get the garden in next year. During this break from school, I need to devise a plan to get rid of some of the lawn for some other features that don't require the mowing. I also need to do something about my patio...it needs some love and care. However, the yard has come a long way since we moved in. I am excited to see flowers blooming, the first raspberries are ripe and ready to be picked and the plums are already growing on the trees. Life is pretty good on this gorgeous Saturday...although I am about to go and spend a ridiculous amount of time mowing and weeding the yard. Maybe someday it will feel like a labor of love as opposed to just feeling like labor!

6.25 -- Fun with Friends

Today we spent the morning at Esther Short park with Selena and sweet baby Kaleb (who is a walking MACHINE!). It was a mild morning, but turned into a beautiful day. Lucas is perfecting his new skill of pumping himself on the swing! He's doing pretty awesome...although he would rather I push him. He also seemed to be perfecting the art of whining this morning, but at least he snapped out of that one! We finished our morning with lunch on the waterfront at McMenamins. I think I could get used to this whole summer vacation thing... at least for a few weeks. I think about the time ESY rolls around, I'll be about ready to be at work...at least for 3 hours a day :)

As a bonus...I went for a four mile walk this evening on the Salmon Creek trail, about a half mile north of our house. On my way back to our house at the head of the trail, I saw a turtle :) He was quite cute, and I had to take another picture. I absolutely love the wildlife around here on my walks. The wild bunnies are another favorite of mine.

6.24 -- Why hello there summer!

After a ridiculously long, cold and wet winter and spring I am glad that summer is finally here. Lucas and I went to preschool story time at Barnes and Noble this morning. I should know better than going to this. I always get irritated with the poorly behaved children whose parents refuse to parent...but oh well. After story time we decided to go to one of our favorite neighborhood parks. The day could not have been more beautiful. It was sunny, 80 degrees and lovely outside. I also enjoyed the fact that Lucas took a solid 3 hour nap after our outing!

6.23 -- The first day of vacation

I honestly did not think that I was going to survive this school year. This was my fifth year in and I thought that I had faced as many hurdles as I possibly could in my first. Little did I know that magic number 5 was going to be the one to really push me to my limits. I do not think that I have ever been so excited for summer in my entire life. We started counting down the days to the end of the school year about 60 days ago. With this awful weather, I wasn't quite sure what summer would bring.

Today, we woke up to a beautiful day... and I woke up with a head cold. Seriously? On the first day of summer vacation? It felt pretty brutal, but I rallied above it to enjoy the sunshine. Lucas and I headed to the zoo. We hadn't been over there in awhile, and Lucas had really been looking forward to seeing the dinosaur exhibit. I remember thinking that it was pretty amazing two summers ago. It was not quite so amazing this summer, nor really worth the $7.00 admission for the two of us. The oddest thing? My son who has been OBSESSED with dinosaurs since the age of two decided all of a sudden that he was nervous and scared. It was the strangest thing. He is still recovering from a long weekend camping with his dad (hence the sleeping last night from 5:00 pm until 6:30 am), but it was still kind of odd for him to be so melodramatic. We had a great morning though. They just got a new cougar and the two are definitely vying for their positions and territory, which was fun to watch. They also have a new black bear who was fun to watch. The lions were playing with huge rubber balls. And pretty much all of the animals were enjoying the lovely sunshine! Lucas claims right now that his favorite thing about the zoo was all of the dinosaurs, especially the one who spit at him (watch for that sneaky dinosaur). My favorites were the cougars. I am sure we will be back for many more days at the zoo this summer.

All in all it was a great start to summer vacation. I am loving this sunshine. I am loving not being at work. And I am loving time with Lucas. I also got to catch up with a long lost friend, which always puts me in a good mood. This cold already seems to be on the way out, so I will be happy when I can breathe and talk in a normal voice again!
